Opposing Realities On Budget Vote
Opposing Realities
On Budget Vote
To the Editor:
The Legislative Council response to the No vote on the proposed budget is indicative of what is wrong with our political system.
The LC took it upon itself to interpret the intentions of the No voters .
In a sane world, when one party proposes a price for a good or service and the other party says no, it is understood the proposed price was too high!
In the Orwellian world of the LC we have a No vote to mean increase the spending and taxes.
We also have the theater of the LC âlisteningâ to a handful of voters pleading to spend more after just witnessing the budget failing by 2,023 No votes.
Evidently the LC intends for the public to vote on this âtill we get it right.â
A zero increase should be the start of a long-term campaign by voters to lower out of control government spending.
If we cannot hold the budget to a zero increase in todayâs economic conditions, we can resign ourselves to perpetual increases in taxes year after year.
Is this what the average Newtown resident can tolerate?
Looks like a test of wills developing, with the LC refusing to lower the budget to a zero increase.
Hopefully, Newtowners will show just how stubborn New Englanders are in the next vote.
