Celebrating Youth

To the Editor:

As Celebrate Youth Month winds to a close I would like to thank all who assisted in the various events and commend those who were honored.

Many years ago, Newtown Youth Services established the tradition of celebrating the wonderful gift of Newtown’s youth during the month of May.  Included in our celebration are Independent Living Day, the Talent Show, and the Outstanding Youth and Gail Smith Awards.

It has been NYS’ privilege to acknowledge the “Little Shining Stars” of preschool, to our graduating seniors, and our youth, adult, and business Gail Smith awardees.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful staff and board for all the contributions they have made to this magical month.  I would be remiss not to thank our various youth community service groups without whom we would be hard pressed to accomplish and carry out all of the month’s activities.

In the musical Camelot there is a song entitled, “The Merry Month of May.” Somehow that song is appropriate as I think of all the wonderful events we have just experienced. Surely there can nothing better or more “merry” than honoring and acknowledging all the wonderful accomplishments and contributions of Newtown’s youth.
