Newtown Blue 8, Brookfield 8: On a muddy and rainy day, the Newtown girls battled to a stalemate with a tough squad. Brookfield held the lead for the majority of the game but Big Blue never gave in. Alex “Big Al” Futterman held the potent Brookfield attack to three goals in the second half to allow her teammates to get back in the game. As always, Julia “the Assassin” Haskins was stellar in the defensive end. Julia got plenty of help from Alexis “Little Mase” Mason and Lexi “Goldie Locks” Leidlein. “Lu” Hage, Jenna “Monster” Carvalho and Lauren “Beef” Carrino each scored multiple goals. Carrino led the team in ground balls. Dani Samson and Rachel Tomasino repeatedly harassed the Brookfield middies as they carried the ball out of the defensive end.

Newtown Blue 11, Southbury 6: It did not look good for the girls in blue on this cool Sunday morning. The girls faced a 6-4 deficit at the half and were outplayed by their bigger and more physical opponents. The sleeping giant awoke in the second half and outscored Southbury 7 to 0 to seal the win. “Lizardo” Hodge was outstanding in goal in the second half by making nine saves, some in spectacular fashion, as she shut out the girls from across the river. Newtown’s defense was physical and aggressive with the Southbury attack. Kira “Shea” Smith and Julia Haskins did the dirty work in the defensive end by forcing multiple turnovers and starting Newtown’s dangerous transition offense. Dylan “Dyzy” Zahansky and Haskins each had three interceptions that thwarted potential scoring opportunities. Lexi Leidlein and Romy “Good as” Gold netted their first goals of the season off of assists from Zahansky and Lauren Carrino. Jenna Carvalho, Lu Hage and Carrino scored the remaining goals. Hayley “Little Red” Lambert, Abby Pearson and Brooke Varnum combined for ten ground balls.
