Snapshot: Lyndon Thomas
Family: My wife Mary; and we have two boys including one, Dylan, who lives in Newtown. My father was a psychiatrist at Fairfield Hills Hospital, which was the reason we came to Newtown.
How did you meet your wife? Mary was in a play with Town Players, called Mary Mary, directed by my mother, Evelyne Thomas. Back then — 1969 — the League of Women Voters would buy the first night, and have a party after. Mary didn’t want to go to the party on her own, so my mother put me on the phone with Mary, who asked me if I would like to go to a party.
Do you have any pets? We have a feral cat, Max.
How long have you lived in Newtown? 54 years with my wife, and another 13 years with my family before that. We arrived Labor Day weekend 1958.
What do you like to do with your free time? I’ve discovered retirement doesn’t give me a lot of free time, but I do like a little bit of travel. I like to read, and do puzzles every morning. I pick up the paper every day and read the comics, then I do the puzzles, and then I read the news. In my younger life used to read the newspaper for the news but with the advent of television of computer services and streaming, we usually stay pretty current with the news during the day. The written newspaper — which we both enjoy — is confirmation of what happened.
If you could spend the day with one person, living or deceased, who would you choose and why? I’d like to spend the day with my father. He was of a generation that at age 21 he was fighting a war. In 1939 he was an insurance clerk. In 1940 he was a base commander of an RAF base in Northern Ireland. His experiences probably helped him understand what was happening, but I didn’t have enough time to talk to him. I went away to boarding school, and as a result I didn’t have my teens growing up with him, which would have been a time when we may have had fights, conversations, or leaning anything else.
Favorite TV show? British murder mysteries. I like Morse, a detective series, which is a spinoff of another one called Lewis, and then for some reason they did him as a young man, on a show called Endeavor.
Favorite color? Blue
What is something you cannot live without? Tea.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? It’s been central to my life.
Do you have a credo? Do unto others as you would do unto yourself.
