Concerned About School Contractor
To the Editor:
The recent decision on the $20 million-plus school package (âBuilding Panel Picks Construction Firms for 5/6 School,â The Bee, May 18, 2001) has others and myself in the town worried. The town is going to award this project to Haynes Construction. I saw an informational package on this company that was almost three inches thick, and none of it was good. The package documented violations from OSHA and the state Department of Labor, a National Labor Relations Board charge, and numerous lawsuits between Haynes and its subcontractors on different projects. There were also many documents from different projects that showed the school board, architect, town, construction manager, subcontractors, or other people involved complaining about problems they were having on Haynes jobs. One letter (from the architect on the Coventry High School project) stated, âThis is by far the largest punch list for [an] area of this size that I have ever done.â
The town may have the responsibility for spending our tax dollars, but itâs still our money. Personally I expect more from the people that work for me. If Mr Valerie of Strategic Building Solutions thinks these are âtypical construction problems,â then I am truly worried because this company will be serving as the watchdog.
As a taxpayer I donât know how to look my kids in the face and explain that we are using a company thatâs broken the law and seems to have a lot of people unhappy with their work because after all, they were cheaper than everyone else. The difference in the four lowest bids was not much. Letâs see if we can do better!
Sincerely,
Jeff Price
