Police Lieutenant George Sinko reports that police are continuing their traffic enforcement campaign, focusing their energy on finding violations involving speeding, distracted driving, failure to wear seatbelts, and the illegal use of handheld cellphones while driving.

The enforcement program is keyed to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents, cut instances of speeding, and reduce aggressive driving, according to the lieutenant.

Lt Sinko lists seven individual recent enforcement projects that police conducted to enforce the traffic laws.

On May 24 on Wasserman Way, police issued six infractions for failure to wear a seatbelt, two infractions for driving unregistered vehicles, and seven warnings for various automotive equipment violations.

In their May 18 project on Hanover Road, police issued one infraction for or traveling too fast and one warning for that offense.

Sgt Sinko said that on May 16, police set up their enforcement project on Washington Avenue, where motorists received four warnings for various automotive equipment violations. One driver was arrested for driving while under suspension.

On May 15, police visited the Poverty Hollow Road/Key Rock Road area. They handed out two infractions and four warnings for the offense of traveling too fast. They also gave one driver a misdemeanor summons for driving without automotive insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle.

In a May 13 enforcement project, police spent time on Queen Street and Wasserman Way. They issued 14 warnings for automotive equipment violations. The continuing police crackdown on traffic violations follows public calls for heightened traffic enforcement to preserve the local quality of life.
