Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet & Voice (NCCB) will present its annual recital next weekend.

The public is invited to join family and friends of the South Main Street studio’s dancers, who will be offering two performances of La Bayadère on Sunday, June 8, at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.

Performances are planned for 12:30 and 3 pm. The shows are 90 minutes including one 15-minute intermission.

There is no admission charge. All are welcome.

According to American Ballet Theatre’s website, “Set in the Royal India of the past, La Bayadère is a story of eternal love, mystery, fate, vengeance, and justice.

“The ballet relates the drama of a temple dancer (bayadère), Nikiya, who is loved by Solor, a noble warrior. She is also loved by the High Brahmin, but does not love him in return, as she does Solor.”

All NCCB students, ranging from age 3 to 18, are participating. The studio has six graduating seniors this year, including four from Newtown. Additionally, freshman Fiona Shaw has been accepted into "the top level of a pre-professional ballet program in Greenwich where she will attend full-time next year," according to NCCB Artistic Director Tory Gozzi.

Shaw has been cast as Nikiya in the early performance of La Bayadère, while graduating NHS senior Lillian Caico will perform the role in the second performance.

Gozzi says the ballet “is dramatic and fun for the whole family with beautiful Moroccan costuming, lush patterned fabrics, lavish gold jewelry and accessories, and lots of props.”
