Newtown Residents Honor Veterans For Memorial Day

On Saturday, May 24, American Legion Post 202 presented its annual Memorial Day Ceremony honoring fallen comrades with a program of remembrance. The event took place at the Liberty and Peace monument on Main Street in Newtown.

Among the dignitaries who spoke were Newtown First Selectman Jeff Capeci, Newtown Selectman Michelle Embree Ku, State Representative Mitch Bolinsky, Brookfield First Selectman Tara Carr, and State Representative Martin Foncello, Jr. The Master of Ceremonies was US Army Major Robert D. Payne III. An opening prayer was given by John Revell, Newtown Police Chaplain, and James Gaston, Esq led the Pledge of Allegiance. American Legion Auxiliary representatives Barbara Carlson and Carol Yanosy also spoke.

Music was provided by Newtown High School Tri-M Club under the direction of Elizabeth Dandeneau. Several songs were included in the ceremony, including, “The Star Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful,” “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” a medley of Armed Forces songs, and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The closing song was “God Bless America.” Luminarias were also placed at the monument with the names of veterans who have passed away or with personal messages printed on the luminary bags.
