Every year before Memorial Day, Newtown Woman’s Club gets together at Liberty & Peace Monument located at the intersections of Main Street, Hanover Road, and Schoolhouse Hill Road. Despite the rain and cold weather, the women gathered once more to plant the flags. As the organizer, Pat Bailey, said, “Our soldiers didn’t stop when it rained, so neither will we.”
Bailey said she had about 400 flags for the women to plant. The small crew of about seven women put about 100 in the ground on Friday, May 23.
