It never fails.

Every year, the Newtown Soccer Club’s Memorial Day Kick-Off Tournament gives a local side – sometimes several – an opportunity to shine.

This year, it was the Newtown Power (Girls U13), White Lightning (Boys U10) and Lightning (Girls U10) which all captured first place in their respective divisions.

Here are all the results –

Girls U13

Power 1, Wilton 0 – Meaghan Carney scored the lone goal to lift the Power. Stefanie Clavette anchored the nets and recorded another shut out. Nora Murphy, Katherine Scott and Hannah Maret pressured on offense all game.

Power 4, Westport 0 – Katherine Scott led the Power with two goals while Stefanie Clavette chipped in another and Kendall Svanda and Cristina Naldini combined for the fourth. Brooke Leifels, Molly Mahony and Abbie Keough kept the shutout intact with strong defensive play.

Power 1, Southbury 0 – Newtown caught a break when a Southbury defender accidentally put a clearing pass in her own goal. The Power held the lead for the rest of the game with strong play from Christina Caporale, Alex Klein and Celeste Cheung.

Power 0, New Milford 0 – The Power finished the tournament undefeated and unscored upon. Lexi Black and Ale Fuentes played well on offense and Kendall Svanda and Stefanie Clavette anchored the nets for the team’s sixth shutout of the season.

Girls U10

Danbury 2, Lightning 1 – Sarah Lynch scored for the Lightning, but they fell 2-1 to Danbury in the opener of the Memorial Day Tournament. Shelby Tolla and Megan Meyer both had good games while Dale Shearin and Siena Cicarelli were solid in goal.

Lightning 3, Easton 0 – Sarah Lynch, Kailee Dunnigan and Dale Shearin scored as the Lightning blanked Easton 3-0. Amy Martinelli and Meaghan Brophy shared goalie duties, and Jessica Keller and Emily Riley played well in the midfield.

Lightning 4, Stamford 0 – Kailee Dunnigan had two goals for the Lightning while Jessica Keller and Emily Riley scored one apiece in a decisive victory over Stamford. Megan Meyer and Caroline Tanner were great in the goal and Meghan Korchman had a good all-around game.

Lightning 1, Ridgefield 0 – Sarah Lynch scored the only goal of the game with an assist from Kailee Dunnigan. Facing an aggressive Ridgefield team, Siena Cicarelli and Dale Shearin were tough in the nets while Taylor LaFave and Meaghan Brophy did a fantastic job on defense and were key in preventing Ridgefield from scoring. The Lightning ended the Tournament 3-1.

Boys U10

White Lightning 2, Easton 2 – Brenton Scott and Nathyn Horvath scored to lead the White Lightning in a draw with Easton. Kaj Djonne and Knute Johnson had assists as Constant Gregoire controlled the midfield.

White Lightning 1, Ridgefield 0 – Brenton Scott scored the lone goal in a win over Ridgefield. Kevin Ovendorf recorded the shutout in goal. Sawyer Conrad and Graham Hubbert controlled midfield and Kevin Droniak controlled the defense

White Lightning 3, Monroe 2 – Luca Imbimbo scored two goals and Clay Gattey added another as the White Lightning snuck past Monroe. Ryan King, Graham Hubbert and Dillon Wikramanayake had assists. Constant Gregoire played great as the striker.

White Lightning 3, Wilton 1 – Brenton Scott scored two goals and Luca Imbimbo added another in a win over Wilton. Clay Gattey had an assist as Nathyn Horvath and Ryan King controlled the midfield.

White Lightning 3, Westport 1 (U11) – Sawyer Conrad, Brenton Scott and Clay Gattey all scored as the Lightning stepped up to their first 11v11 game to dominate Westport. Dillon Wikramanayake, Kevin Droniak and Kaj Djonne notched assists. Knute Johnson anchored the D.

IN-HOUSE

Boys U14

Liverpool 4, Meteors 0 – Brian Johnson scored two goals to lead Liverpool to the win. Dieter Gutbrod controlled the defensive half of the field as strikers Niles Wilson and Reid Higham kept up the offensive pressure. For the Meteors, Austin Isola and Ethan Perkus played well at midfield as Doug Brede and Zach Baudisch were strong on defense.

 

Boys U10

Dynamite 3, Red Bulls 3 – Wesley Morlock, Mitchell Stewart and Connor Miller scored goals to provide the Dynamite a 3-0 halftime lead but the Red Bulls evened the score with three second half goals by Michael Parker, Ryan Szalay and Jordan Abraham. For the Dynamite, Michael Berko and Chris Zakur also had strong games.

Wolverines 4, Scorpions 1 – Harry Solaski had three goals and Thomas Rahr added one to lead the Wolverines. Eric Von Schluesengen and Alec Bedini played well. Liam McNichols scored for the Scorpions with good all around play from Michael Marcinek, Izaiah Volpe and Kyle Watkins.

The Oskars 7, Scorpions 3 – Spencer Tolson and Albert Dean powered the offense to lead The Oskars to the win. Tommy Shaker helped out with great play on both sides of the field while Adam Koziol helped out with a strong game on D. For the Scorpions, Patrick Rowley scored twice with David Pierce adding an additional tally. Cary DeYoung played a great game at the wing and Dan Cummings anchored the defense.

Boys U8

Silver Scorpions 3, SuperChargers 1 – Quinn Helmig scored twice and Michael O’Keefe scored once to lead the Scorpions. Gavin Stubbs and Danny Sullivan had great all-around games. Owen Samson scored the lone goal for the SuperChargers, with Bryan Morrissey, Tiernan Keane and Ian Klepacki having great performances.

Girls U6

American Eagles 1, Team (#1) 1 – Rachel Tomasino scored with five minutes left to lift the American Eagles to the draw. Janyce Toth played well in goal as Grace Sholtes played well at both ends of the field. Maggie Beardsley notched the goal for Team #1. Caroline Viselli made several nice saves in goal as Erin Burns sparkled on defense.
