Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*CRAFT CLASS, Patchwork Bandboxes, on Tuesday, June 5, at 1 pm.

*Social Gathering POT LUCK dinner is June 5, from 4 to 6 pm. Dinner is roast chicken, assorted summer salads, corn on the cob, watermelon, tea and coffee. Bring a dessert to share. Cost is $5.

*HEARING LOSS WORKSHOP is Thursday, June 7, at 1 pm. A short film will be shown. Learn how the ear hears and causes of hearing loss, and types of hearing aides.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

*VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with flower boxes, side garden, garden by the stairs, making cards for the troops, and folding and addressing our newsletter.

*ANNUAL PICNIC is Tuesday, June 12, 11 am to 3 pm, at Dickinson Park. Bring a lawn chair and a snack or dessert; listen to live entertainment. Cost is $5 per person.

*Join meteorologist ART HORN on Thursday, June 14, at the Senior Center at 1 pm, for a 50-minute slide show  on “Weather of the USA.” Space is limited, so call to reserve a seat.  

 

Day Trips

*Visit Emerson Place in Mount Tremper in the Catskill Mountain area, home to the WORLD’S LARGEST KALEIDOSCOPE Wednesday, June 13. Lunch at Catskill Rose and then visit Stucki Embroidery Work. Last stop is “Chocolate Cheers.” Depart 9 am; $76 per person.

*GYPSY at the Westchester Broadway Theater, depart at 9:30 am on Thursday, June 21; $71 per person.

*Summer Festival at PLATZL BRAUHAUS in Pomona, N.Y., Tuesday, July 10. Enjoy three meals, a dip in the pool, shuffleboard, bocci, or listen to the band play. Bring your swimsuit. Depart at 8:30 am; cost is $75 per person.

*On Thursday, July 19 visit the New England Carousel Museum and then have a lunch buffet and cruise down the Connecticut River on the Lady Katherine. Next to Lyman Orchards and visit the “Apple Barrel.” Depart 9 am; cost is $66.

*THE ROCKETTES at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, November 9, with lunch at Rudy’s. Early booking special, $105 per person.

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

 

Overnight Trips

*FUTURE TRIPS include a 3-day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch countryside and visit the King Tut exhibit in Philadelphia, July 25–27; an 8-day tour of Scotland, August 22–30; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise September 3–8. Trip booklets are available at the front desk.

Monday: June 4: BBQ beef on a hamburger bun, rice, mixed vegetables, fruit cocktail.

Tuesday: June 5: Maryland crab cakes, scalloped potato, French cut green beans, tartar sauce, wheat dinner roll, apricots halves.

Wednesday: Chicken noodle soup, unsalted crackers, cold cut grinder with turkey salami, turkey and American cheese, mayonnaise, coleslaw, pickle wedge, pistachio pudding with whipped topping.

Thursday: Spaghetti with meatballs and marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, tossed salad with cucumber and Italian dressing, garlic bread, chocolate chip cookie.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: June 11: Crunchy fish fillet with tarter sauce or ham and cheese sandwich on rye with mustard, mashed sweet potato, bean and carrot blend, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: June 12: Chicken parmesan, penne pasta with marinara sauce, spinach, Italian bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts, Social Gathering.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.
