The Western Connecticut Youth Hockey Association (WCYHA) will be launching a girls’ travel hockey program and plans to have at least one team for the 2007-08 season.

An introductory free skate and information session will be held Friday, June 15, fro 6 to 7:20 pm at the Danbury Ice Arena. A 12-and-under travel team (ages 8 through 12) is planned for the 2007-08 season with other age groups added in ensuing years. Teams for other age groups will be considered this year if there is enough interest.

“Our goal is to provide girls with an opportunity to play competitive travel hockey,” said Phil Sandercox. “We will teach proper technique, improve skills and develop in our players an understanding of how to play the game.”

Players heading to the Ice Arena for the free skate should be prepared to play. Full hockey equipment is required. While the girls skate and scrimmage, the parents can learn about the goals for the year, meet the coaches, and ask any questions they may have about what it means to be on a travel team.

An RSVP is appreciated, but not required. Please e-mail Phil Sandercox at psandercox@charter.net or call 203-258-9817 for further information. Anyone interested in joining the team, but are unable to attend the June 15 session, should also contact Mr Sandercox.

The season will run from September through March 1. We will hold two practices per week and one or two games per weekend. Games will begin in mid to late November.

Tuition will be firmly set late this summer when there is a better idea about how many skaters there are. Tuition will most likely be between $1,200 and $1,500 for the season. An estimate of costs includes – tuition: $1,200 to $1,500 (includes all ice time and practice jersey and socks); uniforms: under $100 (two jerseys and two pairs of socks – home and away); USA Hockey Membership: approximately $40; equipment (WCYHA requests players wear navy blue helmets, gloves and pants).

A $500 deposit reserves your space on the team. Full payment of tuition is due before the start of the season unless other arrangements are made through the WCYHA.
