Verdi’s ‘Nabucco’ To Be Shown In Southbury

SOUTHBURY — The Southbury Senior Center’s next “Afternoon at the Opera” program will feature Verdi’s first great opera success, Nabucco. On Wednesday, June 13, at 1 pm, in the auditorium of Pomperaug Woods, a performance of the opera will be screened.

The performance was filmed in 1987 in Milan’s La Scala opera house, starring Renato Bruson and Ghena Dimitrova with the chorus and orchestra of La Scala, conducted by Riccardo Muti.

Nabucco firmly established Verdi as the voice of the Italian people and in particular “Va pensiero,” the great chorus of longing sung by the exiled Hebrews on the bank of the Euphrates.

The showing is open to the public and admission is free, with refreshments provided by Pomperaug Woods. Additional information is available by calling Carole Damon at Southbury Senior Center, 262-0651, or Becky Butler at Pomperaug Woods, 262-6557.

Pomperaug Woods is at 80 Heritage Road.
