Council Should Rectify

Its Mistake

To The Editor:

I am writing to express my deep concern about the budget. At this point we are being asked to vote — again — on a school budget that does not even begin to offer the same services as last year, let alone enable us to improve. This is not sustainable and it is wrong. I have heard commentary about the fact that our schools are “just fine” and the children are continuing to “do well.” However, with a continual decline in support for education, we are failing our children and our town. Every year that we de-commit funding for education we threaten our children’s ability to reach their full potential.

At the town meeting on May 16, the Legislative Council indicated that the last time that they restored funding to the education budget, it was a “mistake.” I understand the desire to not repeat a mistake, but in this case, the mistake was in cutting the $1 million after the April 24 failed referendum.

I beg the LC to take appropriate action to restore funding to the education budget to rectify the mistake that it made. I beg the members to listen to the voices of the concerned people in this town who support improvements in our schools.

Respectfully,

Kris Powers
