‘Emily’ Xia

Minjuan “Emily”) Xia, 80, of Newtown, died May 30, at Filosa Nursing Home in Danbury. She was born March 3, 1932, in Zhenghai, China. 

She was an English professor at the Shanghai Foreign Trade Institute in China before coming to the United States in 1986. She was a visiting professor of Comparative Literature, worked at Butler Library for Columbia University in New York City, and retired in 1999. 

Reading, traveling, and playing piano were her favorite pastimes, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She attended Newtown Congregational Church. 

She was the widow of Guanghui “Bright” Chen, and is survived by her daughter, Ella Chen, and her husband Jason Hsu, of Newtown; two grandchildren; a sister, Ruth of New York; a brother, S.K. of Taiwan; another brother, Paul, and two other sisters, Huijuan and Qinjuan, all of China; and several nieces and nephews and their families. 

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, June 9,  at the Newtown Congregational Church.

The Honan Funeral Home, Newtown, is assisting the family.
