State Police List Holiday Enforcement Statistics

State police report that during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, they investigated 279 motor vehicle accidents, of which 57 accidents involved injuries.

There was one fatal motor vehicle accident during the period, when an adult male pedestrian was killed near Exit 30 on Route 8 in Waterbury at about 4 am on May 27.

State police made 77 arrests for driving under the influence. They issued 816 violations for failure to wear seatbelts. They also issued 1,797 violations for speeding.

By comparison, during the Memorial Day holiday weekend in 2011, state police investigated 260 motor vehicle accidents and four fatal crashes. During that period, state police made 70 arrests for driving under the influence, issued 2,013 speeding tickets, and gave out 978 seatbelt violations.

State police will continue their traffic enforcement through the summer with the goals of ridding the roads of aggressive, alcohol/drug-impaired, and unsafe drivers, according to state police spokesman Lieutenant J. Paul Vance.
