Supporting Education

To the Editors:

Regarding the upcoming budget vote June 5, it does seem difficult to know in this case whether a Yes or No will be understood as “more education” or “lower taxes,” or otherwise. So, just to be clear, my vote will be intended to support education efforts and budgets — and I’ll figure out whether Yes or No best communicates that preference.

Clearly, a few hundred thousand dollars this year will not rectify some shortcomings in Newtown’s schools. Nor will anything we do in Newtown, in itself, fix the nation’s educational shortcomings. However, a clear and consistent willingness to do what we can for education is important, not just in terms of our town taxes and budget, but in terms of what value we place on the prospects for this society.
