The National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y., has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northern Fairfield County and northwestern New Haven County.

The warning will remain in effect until 7:45 pm.

At 4:49 pm, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain across the area. Up to two inches of rain have already fallen. Flash flooding is expected.

In addition to Newtown, locations that will experience flooding include Waterbury, Danbury, Naugatuck, Southbury, Wolcott, Bethel, Cheshire Village, Roxbury Falls, Chimney Point and Putnam Lake.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches is possible in the warned area.

The weather service is urging anyone in the affected area to “move to higher ground now. Act quickly to protect your life.

“Turn around ... don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

Newtown's forecast through the National Weather Service is calling for continued showers on Monday, with a steady temperature around 51 degrees and a northeast wind around 11 pm. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent, with less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are being called for tonight.

“Some of the storms could produce heavy rain,” according to NWS. Temperatures will drop to a low around 48, and there could be a northeast wind of 9-11 mph. Chance of precipitation for the overnight hours is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches are possible.

On Tuesday, rain will continue mainly before 3 pm, with temperatures reaching a high near 56. Chance of precipitation is 90%, and new precipitation amounts for Tuesday are ½ and ¾ of an inch possible.
