State Bars Early Release For Some Criminals

HARTFORD — The Connecticut House of Representatives has approved legislation slamming the door on early release for criminals convicted of certain violent offenses. But minority Republicans said the list of ineligible crimes is too short.

The House approved the measure 90-56 on Tuesday and sent it to Governor Dannel P. Malloy.

On Friday, the Senate clarified who is eligible for early release because confusion arose after the House passed a bill that appeared to allow violent felons who are ineligible for parole to participate in the credit program.

Representative Gerald Fox, the House chairman of the Judiciary Committee, says good conduct alone will not qualify an inmate for early release.

People convicted of murder, capital felony, felony murder, arson murder, aggravated sexual assault and home invasion will not be eligible for early release.
