The Newtown Flag Football League will hold an official sign-up date on Saturday, June 12, from 10 am to 2 pm, in the old courtroom at the Town Hall. All players interested in participating must sign up on this date and be prepared with the $75 fee, birth certificate and driver’s license.

League organizers are looking to create an eight-team league, with 10 to 12 players per team. Full team signups are encouraged, but spots would be found for individuals if any spots are available. The league is expected to fill quickly.

A local group – led by Joe Brown, Charlie Coates, Mark Fracker, Tim Frawley and Tony Willie – began putting the pieces together for the NFFL some time ago. Affiliated with the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department, the league has an extensive rulebook (emphasizing the non-contact aspect of the game) and a place to play its regular season and playoff games.

The league will run from Tuesday, July 6, through Saturday, August 14. All regular season games (each team will play 10) will be played on the football field behind Newtown High School, while playoffs will be held at Treadwell Park.

Captains’ meetings will be held following signups.

Anyone interesting in becoming a referee for the NFFL, contact Mr Fracker at 241-4556. Training sessions will be provided. For further information, contact Mr Coates (770-3740) or Mr Brown (313-9353).
