St Rose of Lima School science teacher Mardé Dimon hosted her school's 11th Annual "STEMie Fair" on the evening of Tuesday, May 17.

STEMie stands for science, technology, engineering, and math including everyone, according to a brochure for the event.

Projects completed throughout the year by her students were on display in the school's Gathering Hall for the event, including projects that were submitted to the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair, held at Quinnipiac University in March.

Fifth and sixth grade students with winning projects at the school level were also noted for the event. Fifth graders Patrick McKenzie earned first place, Ivy Hillman earned second place and Johnny Dorazio earned third place for their projects. Sixth graders Kayla Ondy earned first place, Katherina Crowe earned second place and Ashley Gotch earned third place for their projects.

For the STEMie Fair, Ms Dimon said grade levels at the school oversaw the preparation and running of different activity stations.

At one station, "Dancing Raisins," Ms Dimon said students dropped raisins into clear soda and watched as the friction of the raisins caused carbon dioxide to stick to the raisins, causing the raisins to float or "dance" to the surface of a cup.

At one station, students tested acidity levels, and at another station, students planted pumpkins. Ms Dimon said students also made "goop" at one station, which she said is always a popular activity at the school's STEMie Fairs.

Roughly 200 people were expected to attend the event before the evening was over.
