Birding By Ear

SOUTHBURY — The Audubon Center at Bent of the River will offer a free workshop, “Birding By Ear,” on Sunday, June 10, and again on Wednesday, June 13. Both workshops will begin at 8 am.

The focus of the workshop will be to learn how to identify birds by their song or call. When trees are fully leafed out, it can be difficult to find birds moving through the treetops. Learning to identify birds by sound can help pinpoint what bird is in the area.

Some basic songs and calls can be learned easily. Some birds are named for the sound they make. A chickadee, singing “chickadee, dee, dee” is one of these birds.

Participants will walk to various habitats on the center’s grounds to listen to and learn to recognize birds by their call. There is no charge, but reservations are requested. The workshops will be held rain or shine.

Bent of the River, at 185 East Flat Hill Road in Southbury, can be contacted by calling 264-5098.
