Assault Charge

Police said they received a report about 10:15 pm May 29 concerning an altercation that occurred at Proud Mary’s, a bar in the lower level of The Inn at Newtown at 19 Main Street.

Police said that after investigating the physical fight that occurred there, they charged John F. Gnerre, 55, of 25 Marlin Road with third-degree assault and breach of peace.

Police said they released Gnerre on a written promise to appear on June 11 in Danbury Superior Court for arraignment on the charges.

Disturbance

Following an investigation into an incident that occurred midafternoon on May 9 at Treadwell Park, police issued infractions to each of three Stratford men on charges of creating a public disturbance.

Receiving those infractions were Tony Amante, 49; Hector Guzman, 36; and Thomas Gorman, 44, police said. The offense carries a $103 fine. The charge is appealable in court.

The incident occurred following a soccer game at the park played by 13- and 14-year-old boys on teams from Newtown and Stratford, according to police. The verbal dispute involved players, parents, and coaches, according to police. The teams are members of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association.

Police said they sent about five officers to the scene to resolve the problems, but by the time they arrived there, the people who had been involved in the altercation were dispersing. A police investigation followed.

Accident In NHS Lot

Police report a motor vehicle accident in the parking lot at Newtown High School, which occurred early on the afternoon of May 24.

In that incident, motorist Susan Pereira, 43, of New Milford, who was driving a 2007 Volvo XC-90 station wagon, was attempting to turn around in the parking lot, but inadvertently struck a parked 1999 Mercedes-Benz C-230 sedan, police report. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Rear-End Collision

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the hazardous intersection of Nunnawauk Road and Wasserman Way about 11 am May 29.

Motorist James McPadden, 39, of 8 Benjamin Drive, who was driving a 2005 Nissan X-Terra SUV, stopped at a stop sign at the north end of Nunnawauk Road and was waiting for traffic to clear so that he could make a right turn onto eastbound Wasserman Way, according to police.

Motorist Waynette Shepard, 25, of Hartford, who was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry northward on Nunnawauk Road, then struck the rear end of the Nissan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police gave Shepard a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Sedans Collide

About 2:35 pm May 28, motorist Lori Capozziello, 46, of 123 Toddy Hill Road, who was driving a 2008 Ford Taurus sedan, was exiting the driveway at that address to make a left turn onto Toddy Hill Road, police said.

At that time, motorist Michael Hadgraft, 17, of 6 Johnny Appleseed Drive was driving a 2000 Plymouth Neon sedan northward on Toddy Hill Road, according to police.

The two sedans collided. Ambulance volunteers transported Capozziello to Danbury Hospital for treatment of pain, police said. Police said Capozziello received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Low Speed Accident

Police report a low-speed, two-vehicle accident during wet road conditions at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and South Main Street about 6:53 am May 29.

In that incident, motorist Alan Johnson, 26, of Danbury, who was driving a 2008 Dodge Ram truck, struck the rear end a 1991 Honda Prelude being driven by R.M. Giandalone, Jr, 17, of Brewster, N.Y., police report. There were no injuries. Police issued Johnson a written warning for following too closely.

 Flagpole Crash

Motorist Stephen White, 64, of Southbury, who was driving a 2009 Nisan Murano SUV southward on Main Street about 3:25 pm May 29, stopped and was preparing to make a left turn onto Church Hill Road at the flagpole intersection, police report.

Southbound motorist Richard Gingras, 63, of 14 Black Cherry Lane, who was driving a 2007 Toyota Prius, then struck the Nissan from behind, police said.

White reported pain, resulting in ambulance volunteers responding to the scene, police said. Police issued Gingras an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

 

Queen Street Accident

Motorist Dawn Ertl, 25, of Naugatuck was driving a 2002 Saturn SL-1 sedan northward near 6 Queen Street about 4:46 pm May 30, when southbound motorist Veronica Parsloe, 18, of 15 Lyrical Lane, who was driving a 2003 Chrysler Sebring southward, made a left turn in front of the Saturn, resulting in a collision, police said.

Both drivers and a passenger in the Chrysler were treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said. 

Police issued Parsloe an infraction for making a restricted turn. Police gave Ertl a written warning for failure to renew a vehicle registration.

Car vs Tree

Police said they investigated a one-car accident near 13 Palestine Road that occurred about 7:49 pm May 29.

Police said that motorist Kyle Kromberg, 17, of 10 Hundred Acres Road told them that he was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima sedan northward on Palestine Road about 40 miles per hour, when while negotiating a curve in the road to the left, the auto’s steering wheel locked up, resulting in a loss of control, with the vehicle going off the right side of the street and striking a tree. Police said Kromberg told them he had no time to apply the vehicle’s brakes.

Kromberg was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Speeding Motorcycle

State police said they detected motorcyclist Jason M. Conley, 28, of Southbury traveling 98 miles per hour westward on Interstate 84, near Exit 11, at about 7:46 pm May 31, so they stopped him to investigate.

State police charged Conley with reckless driving and with misuse of a motorcycle permit. Conley was released on $250 bail for a June 15 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Excessive Speed

While on patrol about 5:07 pm May 30, state police detected motorist Alexander Welp, 20, of New Fairfield driving a vehicle 107 miles per hour on westbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 11, so they stopped him to investigate.

State police charged Welp with reckless driving. He posted $500 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 15.

Ramp Crash

State police report a two-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 84’s Exit 9 on-ramp about 4:43 am May 30.

In that accident, motorist Azeez Bhavnagarwala, 41, of 48 Farrell Road, who was driving a 2000 Audi A-6, drove into the rear end of a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Robert Morrarty, 60, of 53 Parmaleee Hill Road, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said they verbally warned Bhavnagarwala for following too closely.

Burglary/Larceny

Police are investigating a burglary/larceny at a Merlin’s Lane residence in which the items stolen may exceed $20,000 in value. Merlin’s Lane contains many large elaborate houses. The street extends from Hattertown Road.

Sometime overnight on May 30–31, someone illegally entered the house, police said. Items stolen include a 2006 Honda Accord sedan, computers, cash, and a handgun, police said.

The residents were not home when the incident occurred. The crimes committed include first-degree larceny and third-degree burglary, both of which are felonies. 

Police learned of the incident on the morning of May 31. Patrol Officer Larissa Nosal conducted the initial investigation.

Police ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them at the police station at 426-5841.

DUI Arrest

Police report that while on patrol about 1:10 am June 3, they spotted motorist Richard Wilkinson, 19, of Brewster, N.Y., who was driving a Ford Explorer SUV, back into another vehicle along the northbound road shoulder of Hawleyville Road, near its intersection with Mt Pleasant Road, and then drive away.

Police said they stopped Wilkinson to investigate and charged him with driving under the influence, possession of alcohol by a minor in a motor vehicle, evading responsibility, and unsafe backing.

After processing, police released Wilkinson on $250 bail for a June 17 court appearance.

Pontiac Damaged

Sometime between 9:30 and 10:30 pm on June 2, an unknown motorist who was driving a vehicle in the parking lot of Mona Lisa Restaurant at 160 South Main Street, struck and damaged the right front section an unoccupied gray 2005 Pontiac Grand Am coupe that was parked in the lot, according to police. The offender then drove away without reporting the collision.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact patrol Officer Thomas bean at 426-5841 in reference to case #9709-6925.

Boulevard Collision

Police report a two-vehicle collision on a sharp curve on The Boulevard, near its intersection with Hall Lane, at about 5:38 pm June 3.

Motorist Evan Corigliano, 26, of Monroe was driving a 1992 Jeep Cherokee SUV southward and negotiating that curve, as motorist Salvatore Finazzo, 53, of New Milford was driving a 1999 Ford Mustang northward and negotiating that curve, police said.

Police said their investigation indicated that the Jeep crossed into the opposite lane, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.

Finazzo was checked at the scene by ambulance volunteers but he declined transport to a hospital, police said. Police charged Corigliano with driving with a suspended license and with failure to drive to the right. Corigliano was released on $100 bail for a June 17 court appearance.
