A collision between two Yankee Trails Inc motor coaches on I-84 last Thursday morning did not cause serious injuries for either driver nor any passengers, but it created additional traffic on the already busy roadway.

Connecticut State Police responded to the area of I-84 East at the Exit 9 ramps around 7:44 am May 28 for a report of a two-vehicle collision. Upon arrival troopers discovered two luxury motor coaches owned by the Rensselaer, N.Y.-based company had collided.

According to the CSP report, a 2019 Motor Coach Industries J4500 being operated by Robert E. Adamkiewicz, 56, of Ravena, N.Y., was traveling in the left of two lanes on I-84 East in Hawleyville when it stopped for traffic.

The second vehicle, a 2025 Motor Coach Industries J Series being operated by Robert Reyes, 66, of Albany, N.Y., could not stop in time, also according to the CSP report. As a result the 2025 bus struck the rear of the 2019 bus. There were 13 passengers between the two buses, men and women ranging from age 30 to 56, and all from New York.

Hawleyville Volunteer Rescue Company and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the crash.

At least six people were checked for injuries. None were considered serious and no one needed to be transported to the hospital.

The crash caused delays that extended well into Danbury for at least 75 minutes. When firefighters and ambulance personnel cleared from the crash, backups were reported for 2.8 miles, nearly back to the Exit 8 offramp.

The 2025 Motor Coach Industries bus was towed due to front end damage by Hilario’s Towing. The 2019 bus was eventually driven from the scene.

Reyes was issued an infraction for following too closely.
