This year marks a major milestone for one of Newtown’s beloved restaurants — Sal e Pepe Contemporary Italian Bistro is celebrating 20 years of culinary excellence, community connection, and warm hospitality.

From the moment you step into Sal e Pepe, located at 97 South Main Street, you're transported into an inviting space where northern Italian flavors meet a cozy and whimsical ambiance.

Owners Angelo and Renia Marini have lovingly cultivated an atmosphere that draws both loyal regulars and new guests alike, and now they’re inviting everyone to celebrate two decades of delicious memories.

The name Sal e Pepe — Italian for "salt and pepper" — is more than just a nod to classic seasonings. Each table features a unique pair of salt and pepper shakers, gathered from the Marinis’ travels and gifted by patrons, adding a personal and playful touch that guests adore.

What truly sets Sal e Pepe apart, though, is the hands-on presence of Angelo and Renia. Their dedication to hospitality, quality, and community is evident in every detail, from the house-made desserts to the fresh flowers adorning each table from Great Ring Farm to the warm greetings that feel like coming home.

For 20 years, the Marinis have helped establish Newtown as a true restaurant destination. They proudly support local sports teams, organizations, and causes, and have built strong ties with the community they call home.

Over the past two decades, Sal e Pepe has earned 60 Connecticut Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards, including three major accolades for 2025: Best Italian in Connecticut, Best Outdoor Dining, and Most Romantic Restaurant.

Upon entering the main dining room, guests are greeted by soft background music, elegant lighting, and an atmosphere inspired by the warmth of Tuscany. The charming bar area is ideal for a casual drink or laid-back dinner, while a private dining room to the right offers space for intimate events, such as bridal showers, birthday parties, business gatherings, and celebrations of life.

Whether enjoying a romantic date night or gathering with family and friends, the Sal e Pepe experience is customized to each guest’s needs. The menu features vegan and gluten-free options, and the kitchen is highly attentive to dietary preferences and allergies.

During the warmer months, the flower-lined patio invites guests to enjoy fresh air while dining under a tent and sipping a refreshing cocktail.

Antipasti: Fan favorites like Maine mussels in Gorgonzola cream or white wine sauce, ranging from $9 to $18.

Zuppe: Soups made daily, including Lemon Chicken Orzo, Tuscan Peasant Soup, and Red Seafood Chowder.

Insalate: A highlight is the signature Caesar salad with house-made Parmesan crisps.

Chef’s Speciali: Six to eight rotating weekly specials, showcasing seasonal ingredients.

Lunch Service: Available Fridays through Sundays from noon, offering a lighter yet satisfying selection.

Entrées: Classics like eggplant Parmigiana and filet mignon alongside the innovative Pastapalooza — a fully customizable pasta experience with over 630,000 combinations for just $25.

Dolci: Renia and Angelo’s handcrafted desserts include the irresistible Nutella Mousse Pie, Key Lime Pie, Pistachio Cream Pie, and a rotating gelato selection.

Children’s Menu: Kid-friendly meals with a beverage and dessert included for $15.

Drinks: Raise a glass to two decades with one of Sal e Pepe’s signature craft cocktails, such as the Basil Martini or Salt and Pepper Margarita. A curated wine list and rotating beer selection offer the perfect pairing for any meal.

Sal e Pepe Contemporary Italian Bistro, at 97 South Main Street in Newtown, is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4 to 8:30 pm, Friday and Saturday from 12 to 9 pm, and Sunday from 12 to 8 pm.
