Maria Klaus, 89, passed away on June 7, 2021. Maria was born on November 8, 1931, to Franz and Johanna Hense in Bad Westernkotten, Germany.

Maria was married to the late Bernhard Klaus and together with their only child, the late Bernhard F. Klaus of Newtown, emigrated to the United States in June 1957. Initially settling in New Jersey, Maria and Berny relocated to Pine Plains, N.Y., in 1986.

Maria, known as Mia by her family in Germany, enjoyed traveling and made many trips to Bad Westernkotten to visit her beloved siblings, Anton Hense and Josefine Thiemeyer, and their families, who survive her. Maria is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Ellen Klaus, of Newtown; her only grandchildren, Bernhard T. Klaus of Taylorsville, Ky., and Matthew J. Klaus of Washington, D.C.; and her two great-granddaughters, Ava and Kayla.

The family would like to thank those who provided care to Maria while she was a resident of The Hearth at Southbury and, more recently, Church Hill Village in Newtown, especially the staff in Memory Care who provided Maria with such an active, comfortable, safe, and engaging lifestyle.

Visitation will be at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, on Tuesday, June 22, from 10 to 11:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, at noon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lustgarten Foundation, lustgarten.org/donate, in memory of Maria’s son, Berny Klaus.
