Relay For Life Was An

Incredible Event

To the Editor:

Once again, the tireless effort and generosity of so many people and area businesses made Newtown’s third Relay For Life an incredibly successful event. We, the entertainment committee, hope those who attended had a good time — we sure did and want to thank all of those who participated in the many activities, especially those gorgeous Miss Relays!

We would also like to thank our awesome DJ Kevin Koschel and his assistant Nicole Moore for doing such a great job and staying late; E’lyda Healy for leading the wake-up yoga; Kathleen Barton of The Graceful Planet for energizing the group with Pilates; Jell-O queen Beckie Ferris; The United Methodist Church of Newtown; and the many area businesses for their generous donations including, The Ice Cream Shoppe, Dunkin’ Donuts, Big Y, Stop & Shop, Target, Stew Leonard’s, Costco, Super Fun Inflatables, and Cadbury Schweppes.

Last, but not least, we want to extend a huge thank you to all of our volunteers, especially Casey McManus and Steve Paproski, and our teams of judges for their help.

We would also like to again acknowledge the awesome relay teams that won in the following categories:

Best Tent Decoration: First Place, Through the Looking Glass; Second Place, Wings of Hope; Third Place, Beauty and the Geek.

Best Costumes: First Place, Broadway Beauties; Second Place, Stars; Third Place, Hippies.

Best Team Spirit: First Place, Mamacitas; Second Place, MTM; Third Place, GCF Angles.

Best Bribe: First Place, No Place like Home (for the donation of a bag of groceries every week throughout the summer to the St John’s Faith Food Pantry); Second Place, Moms on the Move (for more chocolate than one could hope eat); Third Place, Hawley School (for a resounding rendition of “Margaritaville”).

Best Spam Carving: Reigning champion Adele Unger wins it again with a carving of a candle votive displaying the intricate Relay For Life logo — and she lit it, too!

And a special thanks to all the teams that participated in the scavenger hunt; we wish they could perform their amazing anticancer jingles for you to hear — a truly creative bunch indeed!

The generosity of all those mentioned and many others has benefited not only the American Cancer Society but our community as well, and we can’t thank you enough.

Sincerely,

Kathy Kingsley

Tracey McManus
