Police Reports | May 12-June 15, 2021

A 2010 Toyota Camry operated by Denise Koury, 62, of Bethel, traveling westbound on Church Hill Road, when she stopped for the stop sign at the intersection at Main Street around 12:09 pm, Wednesday, May 12.

At the same time, a 2018 Honda Fit Sport operated by Maria D. Rocha-Iacerda, 48, of Naugatuck, was traveling southbound on Main Street.

A non-contact vehicle that had been traveling south on Main Street was stopped at the intersection with Church Hill Road.

The Camry continued through the intersection and collided with the driver’s side door of the Honda as it went around the non-contact vehicle.

Both drivers wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported.

The Camry was towed following the crash.

Koury was given a verbal warning for violation failure to obey a stop sign, due to the intersection not being clear after stopping.

Truck vs Kia

Newtown Police report David White, 32, of Newtown, was operating a town-owned 2009 Sterling Bullet truck around 11:52 am, Wednesday, May 12, within a Queen Street parking lot, when he backed into the passenger side of a parked, unoccupied 2015 Kia Sportage EX.

There were no injuries reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Prayer Book & License Found

On Friday, May 28, a well-used, blue, pocket-sized prayer book and a Jamaican driver license belonging to Jerome D. Creary were found in the area of 31 Main Street.

Newtown police ask that anyone in contact with Creary advise him that his property can be picked up at the police department, 191 South Main Street.

Restricted Turn On Currituck

On Friday, May 28, at 2:50 am, Newtown Police officers were dispatched to the area of 146 Currituck for a reported one-car motor vehicle accident.

Following a brief investigation on scene, it was determined that Jaden C. Lozada, 21, of Brookfield, had been operating a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek southbound on Currituck Road near Butterfield Road.

The compact SUV went off the southern side of the roadway and struck a wildlife crossing sign on the southbound shoulder. The vehicle continued traveling on the southern shoulder of the road before striking a Frontier utility pole and coming to a stop.

Lozada was wearing a seat belt and did not report any injuries.

The Crosstrek was towed from the scene due to disabling damage.

Lozada was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Rental Truck vs RR Bridge

Joao R. Rodriguez-Barrera, 27, of Hartford, was operating a 2016 International 4000 Series 4300 owned by Ryder Tuck Rental, traveling on Currituck Road, around 7:50 pm, Friday, May 28.

The truck was too tall for the former railroad bridge near Currituck’s intersection with Signal Post Road, and the truck struck the bridge.

The bridge ripped the roof off the cargo area of the truck, leaving portions wedged into the bridge itself.

Currituck was temporarily closed while the truck and debris was removed from the bridge.

There were no injuries.

Rodriguez-Barrera was given an infraction for failure to obey traffic sign/signal.

Two-Vehicle Crash

David R. Golembeski, 35, of New Milford, was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 around 12:34 pm, Thursday, June 3, when he pulled out of the lot at 151 Mt Pleasant Road, and turned left to travel north.

At the time, a 2018 Nissan Rogue being operated by Tonia L. Cobb-Mesidor, 47, of Oxford, was traveling southbound on Mt Pleasant Road.

The vehicles collided.

Cobb-Mesidor was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

The accident is under investigation.

Restricted Turn

While operating a 2004 Lincoln Town Car around 12:56 pm, Thursday, June 3, Jacob Y. Loubier, 17, of Naugatuck, turned left from Mile Hill Road onto South Main Street.

As the Town Car began taking the corner, Loubier lost control of the vehicle. The car went off the right-hand side of the roadway, ran over some DOT guidewires, and then struck a guidewire post on the southbound shoulder of South Main Street.

Loubier and a passenger were both wearing seat belts. Neither reported injuries.

The vehicle received heavy front end damage, and was towed from the scene.

Loubier was given a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Nissan vs Saturn

Newtown Police report a 2006 Saturn VUE was parked in a parking space directly in front of Botsford Post Office, 1 Botsford Hill Road, around 3:09 pm, Thursday, June 3, when a 2012 Nissan Maxima S/SV being operated by Marlene H. Bohm, 88, of Monroe began pulling into the space immediately adjacent to the Saturn.

Sebastian S. Purcell, 18, of Monroe, was sitting in the Saturn.

Bohm took the right-hand turn into her intended parking space too wide, and the front driver’s side bumper of the Nissan scraped against the passenger’s side of the Saturn.

Bohm admitted she took the turn too wide while pulling into the parking space and scraped the Saturn.

No enforcement action was taken.

Mazda vs Jeep

Newtown Police report a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited being operated Laura G. Bilotto, 59, of Sandy Hook, was traveling northbound on Toddy Hill Road near the intersection of Settlers Lane around 5:08 pm, Friday, June 4.

At the same time, a 2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring compact SUV being operated by Amy J. Wood, 32, of Monroe, was traveling southbound on Toddy Hill Road.

Bilotto told police that while traveling northbound she observed the Mazda slowly drift into her lane. She stated that she moved her vehicle to the far right extreme of her lane and began honking her horn to get the operator’s attention. She stated that the other operator finally looked up but was unable to avoid a collision.

The Mazda struck the Jeep in the northbound travel lane.

Wood admitted to looking down in her car to try to find her vape pen.

No injuries were reported.

The Mazda sustained moderate front left bumper, tire, and driver’s door damage. The Jeep sustained moderate front left bumper and tire damage. Both were disabled from the damage and towed from the scene by Hilario’s.

Wood was issued an infraction for failure to drive right.

No Injuries, No Enforcement

Newtown Police report a 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium was backing up in a lot on Berkshire Road around 7:16 pm, Friday, June 4, when the rear end of the Outback made contact with the front end of a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Touring AWD, which was parked and unoccupied.

The responding police officer found minor damage to a piece of silver trim on the front end of the Mazda. They did not see any damage on the Outback.

There were no injuries and no enforcement reported.

Passing On Right

Newtown Police report a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Ryley F. Gallagher, 30, of Newtown, was traveling westbound on Sugar Street, approaching Boggs Hill Road, around 5:07 pm, Tuesday, June 8.

A 2008 Ford F-150 pickup truck being operated by Fabio F. Campos, 40, of Danbury, was also traveling westbound on Sugar Street, behind the Chevrolet.

The Chevrolet signaled a left turn onto Boggs Hill Road and stopped for traffic. The Ford attempted to pass the Chevrolet on the right, and the driver side view mirror of the truck struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet.

No injuries were reported to either driver or to either passenger in the Chevrolet.

Campos was given a verbal warning for passing on the right.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report a 2013 Honda Pilot EXL being operated by Sean J. Reilly, 16, of Newtown, was traveling northbound on Washington Avenue behind a 2018 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited around 12:50 pm, Wednesday, June 9.

The Subaru was stopped in traffic, and the front end of the Honda struck the back end of Subaru.

Reilly told police he was looking for his license because he thought he may have left it at school.

No injuries were reported.

There was no damage to the Honda.

The Subaru sustained very minor damage. Neither vehicle needed to be towed.

Reilly was given a verbal warning for following too close resulting in a motor vehicle accident.

Civic vs Impreza

Connecticut State Police report a 2014 Subaru Impreza being operated by Patti Krehel, 59, of Newtown, had stopped for traffic in the high speed lane on I-84 East between Exits 10 and 11 around 5:45 pm, Wednesday, June 9.

A 2016 Honda Civic EX was in motion behind the Impreza, in heavy traffic on the dry roadway. The Civic, being operated by Paul R. Fracasso, 62, of Cheshire, failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the Impreza.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the crash.

Krehel was checked for possible injuries, but was not transported. Fracasso was uninjured. Both were wearing seat belts.

The Impreza sustained moderate rear end damage, but was driven from the scene.

The Civic sustained heavy front end damage and was towed from the scene by Modzelewski’s Towing.

Fracasso was issued an infraction for failure to drive at a reasonable distance apart, resulting in a collision.

Unsafe Lane Change

Connecticut State Police report a 2020 Hino Conventional Truck and a 2019 Kia Forte were both traveling on I-84 East, just east of the Exit 11 on-ramp, around 9:36 am, Thursday, June 10.

Sarah A. Mercier, 34, no address given, was operating the Forte, and Richard Willis, 64, of Middletown, N.J., was operating the commercial truck.

Mercier made an unsafe lane change, and the Forte collided with the truck.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene.

The Forte was towed by Modzelewski’s Towing, and Mercier was given an infraction for making the unsafe lane change.

Written Warning

Newtown Police report a 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek SUV, operated by Natalie Saunders, 19, of Newtown, was stopped in traffic westbound on Church Hill Road, west of The Boulevard, around 1:32 pm, Friday, June 11.

A 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, operated by Carrie Kugler, 50, of Newtown, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road directly behind the Subaru and had also stopped in traffic.

A 2016 BMW 3 series, operated by Anthony Damico, 17, of Newtown, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road directly behind the Hyundai. Damico did not stop in time to avoid contact with the Hyundai, and the front end of the BMW struck the rear end of the Hyundai. The impact to the Hyundai then caused the front end of that car to strike the rear end of the Subaru.

Damico was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Keys Found

A set of car keys on a black colored lanyard with lettering was found in the area of Dodgingtown Road and Taunton Hill Road on June 11.

The keys included a Honda key and a Lexus key.

The owner of this found property can identify and pick them up at the Newtown Police Department. Refer to case 2021-7501.

Evading Box Truck

Newtown Police report Stephen M. Marron, 60, of Sandy Hook, was traveling east on Berkshire Road around 10:02 am, Saturday, June 12, operating a 2017 Toyota Camry.

A vehicle turned left onto Jordan Hill Road from the westbound lane of Berkshire Road. The passenger side of that vehicle — described as a yellow box truck type vehicle — struck the passenger side of the Camry.

Marron was not injured; the box truck left the scene without stopping.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Rolling Chevy

Newtown Police report a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse stopped in the parking lot of Sand Hill Plaza, 228 South Main Street, around 11:55 am, Tuesday, June 15, when Gaetano Marra, 36, of Monroe, exited the vehicle without putting it into park.

The Traverse rolled back across the lane of the parking lot and made contact with the rear of a 2013 Ford Focus SE which was parked and unoccupied.

There were no injuries reported to Marra nor to any of the three passengers in the Traverse.

No enforcement action was taken.
