The following letter has been received for publication:

To the Editor:

Dear Newtown — The Newtown Allies for Change has given over 130 books — from picture books to adult historical research — through the Little Free Library at Treadwell Park! We wish to thank the Rotary Club and Newtown Parks & Rec, especially Amy Mangold and Carl Samuelson, for their support in placing this Little Free Library in September and thank the community for participating in the Library.

It has been encouraging to see that not only have books been taken, but community members have donated many books for the Library as well. In addition, we wish to thank the local Girl Scout troops who have placed seeds and bubbles in the Little Free Library for the public to take and enjoy.

It is our goal to make sure that all the people in Newtown can see themselves within the pages of a book.

Diversity in our community is a wonderful strength of Newtown and we are hoping to support our neighbors by providing books that can be mirrors, windows, and doors. Mirrors so that we all see ourselves in the pages of a book, windows into the lives of others who are different from ourselves, and doors into understanding and empathy.

We look forward to many other Newtowners using the Little Free Library — the beautiful new walkway being placed by Newtown Parks & Rec is making it even more accessible for our community.

Thank you to all who have supported this project!

Sincerely,

Melissa Houston

Sandy Hook
