Margaret “Peggy” Jane (Hughes) Tattar, 89, of Newtown, died on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Peggy and her identical twin Patricia “Patsy” were born in New Haven on June 22, 1935; daughters of Henry and Margaret (Reynolds) Hughes. Peggy and Patsy had two sisters, Mary Ann and Ita, and a brother Henry.

When they were young, the family moved to Greenwich. Peggy graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. Her first job was at The Putnam Trust Company. She met her future husband, Joseph Tattar, a teacher, on a blind date. They had three children, Michael, Jody, and Brian. In 1965, they built a home in Ridgefield where Peggy lived until 1999.

In Ridgefield, Peggy was an active member of St Mary’s Parish and she belonged to a prayer group and knit prayer shawls for the ill. She was a costumer for Ridgefield Workshop for the Performing Arts. As her children grew up, she worked for Ridgefield Yellow Pages, Save the Children, and several local consignment shops before going into business with Patsy at Island House The Irish Shoppe.

After she retired, Peggy moved to Newtown where she thrived. She entertained frequently (“I’m having the girls over”) and developed a large group of friends. She became a member of St Rose of Lima.

Peggy had an artistic side that included gardening, decorating, sewing, needlepoint, knitting, decorative crafts, and painting. She stayed active and adventuresome even into her later years where she kayaked, hiked, and even hopped on the back of a motorcycle for a ride.

Peggy is survived by her three children: Michael and his wife Lana (DeNicola), Jody and her husband Peter Wood, and Brian and his wife Julia (Bosch); and her three grandchildren: Kerry Tattar, MJ Tattar and his wife Kelly (Black), and Jessica Tattar. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her siblings Mary Ann Perna, Ita Hardiman, Patricia Kershner, and Henry Hughes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 30, at 10 am, at St Catherine of Siena Church, 4 Riverside Avenue in Riverside, officiated by Monsignor Robert E. Weiss. Interment will follow at St Mary-Putnam Cemetery, Greenwich.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peggy’s memory may be made to Save the Children and the Iron Disorders Institute.

Honan Funeral Home in Newtown is in care of arrangements.
