A Fanfare For Dr Reed

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Newtown High School Band and Color Guard Parents, I would like to express our thanks for Dr John Reed’s support of the music programs throughout the district for the past 20 years. The result of his support and of his staff’s efforts is evident every time we travel to different venues and compare the quality of our program to that of our neighboring communities. We have a tremendous percentage of high school students involved in the orchestra, chorus, and various bands thanks to the appreciation of music they develop earlier in their education here in Newtown.

Being sensitive to the needs of the taxpayers and delivering value for the dollars spent is not an easy task. Over the years, during many of the failed budgets, I am sure the pressure to cut these types of programs was strong. Albert Einstein once said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” John Reed took these opportunities to reiterate his belief, supported by scientific studies, that music education was a key factor in overall student achievement.

Many people would agree that there are few things in life more important than a good education. In the words of Edward Everett, “Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army.” The future of the students of Newtown and all of our futures has been enhanced because John Reed has served us so well. Thank you.

I wish him the best of luck in his retirement and success in his future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Stephen G. Rosentel
