Audubon Happenings In July

South Britain — Several outdoor excursions are planned for the month of July in which Audubon staff members will lead visitors on guided nature walks to observe butterflies, dragonflies, moths, and various species of ferns.

All programs take place at the Audubon Center at Bent of the River in South Britain.

On Saturday, July 9, local insect aficionado Mark Szantyr will lead participants on a fascinating journey around the meadows to catch and identify numerous butterfly and dragonfly species. This walk begins at 9:30 am at the kiosk at the entrance parking lot.

A Beginner’s Fern Identification program will take place on Sunday, July 10, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, led by Carolyn Longstreth. Participants will walk through the Bent to admire and identify as many as 15 different fern species. Wear sturdy shoes and bring bug repellant and water.

On Monday evening, July 18, meet naturalist Mark Szantyr at the education barn (park at entrance and walk up the road or along the river trail) at 8:30 pm for a Moth Walk. Using a mercury vapor light and a slurry mixture of stale beer, molasses, and other moth-attracting ingredients, Mr Szantyr will attempt to lure moths and other nocturnal insects for group study and photography. Bring insect repellant, water, and a camera if desired. The Moth Walk will last until 10 or 11 pm.

In addition to attending any or all of these programs, area nature lovers and outdoor buffs are always welcome to assist Audubon staff in battling invasive plants at The Bent that smother wildflowers, destroy wildlife habitats, and damage ecosystems. Every other Monday throughout the growing season, volunteers gather at the center to help rid the forests and fields of these aggressive plants. Anyone interested in joining the battle may do so by showing up at 1:30 pm on July 18 with heavy-duty gloves.

Call the Audubon Center to sign up for any of these events. In case of rain, some of the programs may be cancelled or postponed, so check to see if the weather is questionable.

Audubon Center at Bent of the River is at 185 East Flat Hill Road. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Call 264-5098 for directions, or with questions. Trails are open to the public seven days a week during daylight hours.
