Babe Ruth Team Finds Key To Victory

Rich’s Keys And Locks topped the Law Firm Of Gail Matthews 5-1 to win the Newtown Babe Ruth 13 year old Prep League baseball title this past week.

Mason Melillo pitched well for Rich’s Keys And Locks, and David Matthews was on the mound and pitched well for Law Firm to begin the game.

In the first inning, Matthews gave up a walk to Matthew Elias to then picked him off first base. Sam Czel then followed with a single but was stranded. In the second inning, Melillo gave up a walk to Nick Randle and a single to Alex Klang, but the Law Firm could not get a run in. In the bottom of the second inning, Matthews gave up a single to Andy Braun and Devin Luzzietti who ripped one up the middle, but Matt Hess popped up a bunt on a sacrifice squeeze, and the Law Firm doubled up Braun to end the frame.

In the top of the third Jake Nezvesky roped a double, but Nick Samuelson threw out Nezvesky at third. Melillo got the next two batters to keep the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the third.  Matthews walked two and Melillo came to the plate. Shawn Cerreta stole third base and Melillo hit a single to bring him in for the first run of the game. With Elias pitching in the top of the fourth Kyle McGrath hit a leadoff double. Steve Britten and Nick Randle followed with singles to bring in McGrath to tie the game. Elias worked around a Trevor Palmer single in his next inning of work.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dillon Palumbo led off with a single and scored on a single by Cerreta for the go-ahead run. Rich’s Keys and Locks added three more runs on doubles from Samuelson, Braun, and Czel.
