C.H. Booth Library will be closed Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Children’s Programs

*Mother Goose Cancellations: Mother Goose for infants and 2-3 year olds will, which have been on hold, will resume Wednesday and Thursday, July 6-7.

*“What Gives?” … Science with Bonnie Shugrue.

Ages 8-10 are invited to join us on Thursday, July 7, at 3 pm, to learn the science of bridge building.

We will construct a bridge out of cardboard that can hold a pile of books.  A $3 material fee will be due the day of the program, and online registration is requested.

For Young Adults

*Creative Writing Summer Camp begins Thursday, July 7.

The Creative Writing Summer Camp for young adults welcomes a new leader this year, Connecticut author Sarah Darer Littman. Camp will meet from 3:30 to 5:30 pm for those entering grades 6-7, and 6 to 8 pm on for writers entering grades 8-9, on Thursdays, July 7, 14, 21 and 25, and Monday, July 28.

This program is for young people who love to write. Participants are expected to attend all five sessions. Each group is limited to ten students who either live or attend school in Newtown.

Sessions will allow time for writing and sharing stories as well as creative activities and one-on-one communication between adults and young people. Online registration is required. 

*Harry Potter Movie Marathon: Leading up to the July 15 release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, we have been showing all the Harry Potter movies in order at the library, and we will continue on Friday, June 8, with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at 1 pm; Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at 4; and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 at 7.

Please note, pizza slices should be pre-ordered for $1 each. Place your order at the 4 o’clock show or call ahead (203-426-4533) by 4 pm on July 8. There will only be a limited amount of extra pizza.

Adult Programs

*Computer Skills Help: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 until noon, the library is offering free drop in help on the third floor computers.  Learn how to create an e-mail account, save to a flash drive, basic word help, cutting and pasting, plus upload files to job hunting sites.

*Altered Books Workshop: Artist Katie Stevenson will visit the library on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 pm, to lead a workshop on taking old board books and turning them into a beautiful work of art.

Examples of some of Katie’s masterpieces are at the second floor circulation desk. Registration is required, and a $6 supply fee will be due at the workshop. Class size is limited to 15.

*Back Up Your Valuable Data: A Computer Class with Mike Ingber.

What is data back up? Why do you need it? What should we be backing up?

Quick, before it’s too late come hear Mike Ingber’s professional advice on this important topic on Thursday, July 7, at 7 pm, or Tuesday, July 12, at 10 am. The class is free, and refreshments will be served. Online registration is requested.

*Insuring Your Future in the Event of  a Catastrophic Event: Learn how to photograph your belongings for insurance purposes.

Staff from Ritz Camera will lead this workshop on  Monday, July 11, at 6 pm.

*Escapes and Intrigues: Julie Stern, a retired teacher of English and philosophy, will be back at the library this summer to lead a discussion series on some classic mysteries. Copies of all of the books are available at the second floor circulation desk.

Programs are on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm will continue July 12 with The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad.
