The Newtown Hawks (U10) opened their Central Valley Fastpitch Softball League season with a 27-11 win over Cheshire. The Hawks then crushed Beacon Falls, 31-4, before losing to Watertown, 14-11, to start off 2-1.

In the win over Cheshire, it was the pitching of Nora Lynn Shimko, Jenna Legros and Megan Sajovic which made a big different. Legros also banged out three hits and Nicole Alberico doubled to pace the offense. Kate Bowen and Shimko turned in some stellar defensive plays, as did Stacy Broughton on an unassisted double play. Elissa Robertson played well behind the plate.

In the win over Beacon Falls, the Hawks banged out 20 hits. Renee Solheim had three while Marley Koschel, Broughton, Robertson, Bowen and Legros had two hits apiece. Shimko tripled and Sajovic doubled. Five different pitchers – Shimko, Bowen, Robertson, Legros and Chelsea Fay – combined on the mound for nine strikeouts.

In the loss to Watertown, a seventh-inning rally – fueled by hits from Shimko, Melissa Fracker, Koschel and Katie Serock – fell just a little bit short. Sajovic singled and doubled to pace the Newtown offense and then anchored the defense with a great catch and throw to Legros for a double play. Fay, Annie Hull and Joanna Barry all had fine games.
