Richard E. Fowler

Richard E. Fowler, 73, of Newtown, beloved husband of Karen (Seelgen) Fowler, died on July 1 in his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr Fowler was born in Bridgeport on November 28, 1928, to the late Richard Emmett and Grace Gertrude (Elliott) Fowler and was a Trumbull resident for 33 years prior to moving to Newtown a year ago.

Mr Fowler was a retired administrator for the Trumbull School System where he was employed for more than 35 years. He was a volunteer for Hospice for many years until his illness. Mr Fowler was an English-as-a-Second-Language consultant and a FISH volunteer. He was the author of the Reading Writing Workshop text and one of the original writers of the SRA Reading Laboratory Kit.

Mr Fowler was a graduate of Fairfield Prep, Class of 1946; and a graduate of the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University graduate programs. After his retirement, Mr Fowler was an adjunct professor at Sacred Heart University for a few years.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Karen, include two sons, Christopher E. Fowler and his wife, Lynn, of Newtown, and David N. Fowler and his wife, Debbie, of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Camden Elliott, Colby Emmett, and Wade Andrew; a brother-in-law, Clayton Seelgen of Milford; and a nephew, Grant Seelgen of Milford.

Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Friday, July 5, at Christ the King Church, 4700 Madison Avenue, Trumbull, at 9 am. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to VNS Hospice At Home, 800 Main Street South, Southbury, CT 06488 or to Rev Joseph Potter, Catholic Center, c/o Bishop’s Office, 238 Jewett Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06606.

The Gregory F. Doyle Funeral Home, 291 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford, is in charge of arrangements.
