Organic Farmers’ Market Sets July 6 Opening

By Nancy K. Crevier

Mary Fellows, market master for the Organic Farmers’ Market, is pleased to announce the start of the 2010 Farmers’ Market season, Tuesday, July 6, from 2 to 6 pm. Granted temporary permission by the Newtown Planning and Zoning Commission to hold the market on the Fairfield Hills grounds, July 6 will be the first of  two “trial runs” to take place at the market’s new location.

“We’re very happy about the space,” said Ms Fellows. “Town officials George Benson, John Reed, Pat Llodra, and Wes Thompson were all wonderful to work with,” she said.

Organic Farmers’ Market customers who have supported the summertime event for the past eight years behind St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook will be pleased to see favorites from previous years, including  Shortt’s Farm and Garden, Waldingfield Farm, and the Artisan Bakery at the new location, as well as several new faces. Ms Fellows is excited about the prospect of a fresh juice company taking part and a mobile brick oven catering company. Customers can expect to find fine handcrafted items for sale at the Organic Farmers’ Market, as well, she said.

As in years past, said Ms Fellows, a box will be set up at the market each week for the donation of fresh produce to benefit the FAITH Food Pantry at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

The second Organic Farmers’ Market is scheduled for Tuesday, July 13, from 2 to 6 pm.

Shoppers can enter at the main entrance to Fairfield Hills off of Wasserman Way, then follow signs to parking and the market.
