Virginia Zimmerman from The Center for Contemporary Printing will be returning to HealingNewtown this month, this time to lead a linoleum block printing workshop.

Her program will be Saturday, July 12, from 1 to 4 pm, at HealingNewtown, in the lower level of Newtown Congregational Church at 14 West Street. She will assisted by staff printers from the center.

“This is a technique that can be attractive to novices and advanced students,” Ms Zimmerman said of block printing. The workshop will cover the entire process of relief printmaking with linoleum blocks, including carving a small block and printing it by hand.

The workshop will be the second of four monthly printing workshops presented with the Center. Ms Zimmerman was in Newtown last month to present one on monotype printing, and plans to offer programs on collagraph in August, and foam intaglio in September.

Participants in the July 12 workshop will create their own single color images by carving away negative space on the linoleum block, leaving the areas they wish to print as black intact. Linoleum block prints are particularly well suited to bold, graphic imagery.

“The black is white and the white is black,” added Ms Zimmerman. The linoleum cut away will not print, and the areas of the block left will create the dark marks

Describing how the correct amount of ink spread on the block is important, she said, “You can tell, as the roller goes over the block, from the sound the roller makes, that the correct amount of ink has been applied.”

The workshop is free, but donations will be accepted and appreciated.
