SOUTH DEERFIELD, MASS. — A rare Baccarat fantasy flower with yellow petals beneath purple/brown petals reached a price of $5,175 at the May 18 paperweight auction conducted by Douglas Auctioneers. Also going above estimate were a Baccarat yellow buttercup with red bud, which reached $4,125, and a Delmo Tarsitano blue iridescent salamander on an earth ground that achieved $2,875.

The collection of 252 antique and contemporary paperweights was put together by a Brattleboro, Vt., gentleman over a 25-year period. He was not active in collecting circles and acquired his pieces either through dealers in the New England area or at auction. His collection, begun in the late 1960s and completed in the very early 1990s, included a wide variety of paperweight makers and types.

Prices on antique French paperweights were strong. A Saint Louis concentric millefiori brought $715, another Saint Louis concentric millefiori reached $1,840. A Clichy concentric on apple green ground sold for $2,875 and Clichy garlands on blue ground rose to $3,450. A Clichy closepack sold for $1,955.

Antique American weights also did well. A New England Glass Company (NEGC) flat bouquet with double garland, the first row with three moth silhouettes, reached $2,300. Also, a NEGC double red petaled aster with double garland, original faceting, brought $1,840. A three-leaf bouquet (with one split petal) on latticinio basket brought $920; and a beautiful red/yellow pear on clear cookie base realized $1,265. Of the small group of Sandwich weights, a red, white and blue crossflower on jasper fetched $1,150. Two fruit weights also did well; two yellow/red pears reached $1,610, as did a weight with two pink/peach pears.

The Brattleboro collector also had a nice selection of contemporary pieces, from Charles Kaziun to Josh Simson. Stankard was represented by five pieces; the highest price of the group went to a compound violet paperweight, which sold for $1,840.

A Chris Buzzini pink flower weight (the only Buzzini in the sale), realized $920, and a Ken Rosenfeld weight, featuring two pink cabbage roses on a moss green carpet ground, reached $690. Of the three Parabelle pieces, the best price was for a central Clichy type rose with garland on a moss carpet ground, which went to $575.

Of the 11 Paul Ysart weights in the collection, best price was realized by a pink and white double flower with garland, $978, and Debbie Tarsitano’s light blue dahlia led her offerings, reaching $1,495.

The Brattleboro paperweight enthusiast collected seven Lundberg weights; the best price was $414 for an orchid by David Salazar. Of the four Kaziun offerings, the highest price was for a blue and white pansy with a torsade at $1,995. A titmice and holly weight by Rick Ayotte led his offerings, with a price of $1,035.

The collection of contemporary weights included a large group from the three major factories: Saint Louis, Baccarat and Perthshire. Of the ten Saint Louis pieces, highest price was for lampworked fruit in latticinio basket, unencased, $920.

There were 22 Perthshire pieces in the sale; a pastel bouquet on double spiral latticinio cushion, amethyst translucent overlay reached $460, and a carpet of complex canes realized $414.

Sixteen Baccarat paperweights were offered, including a 1973 mushroom overlay, $460, and a 1991 millefiori butterfly, $475. Baccarat sulphides did unusually well: a Ben Franklin achieved $245, Lafayette went to $184 and Monroe to $115.

Other items of interest were a small inhabited planet paperweight by Josh Simpson that brought $230, a D’Albret sulphide of Chief Sitting Bull that realized $345 and a Mayauel Ward dessert bouquet that reached $373.

This was the fifth in a series of paperweight auctions offered Douglas Auctioneers, which is on Route 5. Auctioneer Douglas Bilodeau conducted the sale with efficiency and dispatch, selling the 252 lots in 2 hours and 15 minutes. All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium.
