Hits For Harmon Yankee Tickets Sweeten The Pot

The Hits for Harmon program, a fundraiser for the Kim Harmon Family Fund and the Connecticut Chapter of the American Heart Association being conducted by the Newtown vintage base ball squad, just got a little more exciting.

The team announced this week that any straight donation of $20 or more to the effort will be entered to win four seats plus parking to the final home stand against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, September 12.

Mr “Cool Papa” Harmon was a former player for the Newtown Sandy Hook Vintage Base Ball Club, as well as the long time sports editor at The Newtown Bee before his untimely passing in December 2007 from a cardio vascular ailment.

Earlier this year, his teammates determined they would start a pledge campaign so anyone of any age could participate to help raise funds that would be split 50/50 between the Heart Association and the Harmon Fund. The object is to make a pledge in any amount from a penny on up, for each run the team scores during the 2008 season, or a straight, one-time donation of any amount.

To date, for those keeping score, the team has amassed 113 total runs.

Program organizer Ray Shaw announced this week the donation of the Yankee tickets and parking voucher, and along with the team, decided to put the package valued at more than $400, up for grabs among anyone making a $20 or higher straight donation.

The team is also gathering, and soliciting additional prizes and gift certificates to distribute among those pledging for the fundraiser. Anyone can pick up a pledge form at the program sponsors — The Newtown Bee, the Main Street office of the Newtown Savings Bank or the Newtown Parks and Recreation Dept at Town Hall South.

Forms are also available at any game of the Newtown Sandy Hook Club for the remainder of the season. Donations are not tax deductible.

The team is also donating all proceeds from the sale of its new, black and scarlet team shirts to the Harmon Fund.

Details about the team’s remaining schedule, a running tally of runs scored, anddetails about t-shirt sales and the Hits for Harmon program are available at the team’s website: www.vbbnewtown.com.
