All-American Pops Concert

By WSO, July 22

WOODBURY — Maestro Leif Bjaland will conduct Waterbury Symphony Orchestra in a special all-American tribute to the American Pops music sound on Saturday, July 22. “The Great American Sound”/11th Annual Picnic & Pops will be an outdoors pops concert. The concert will begin at 4 pm and will be performed at The Hollow, on Hollow Road (off Main Street South/Route 6).

Lawn tickets for adults are $10 in advance or $15 day of the concert. A special patron tent with reserved seating is $50 in advance. Children up to 18 are free. Call Kathy Green at Waterbury Symphony Orchestra for further information, at 203/574-4283.

The program will feature two talented violinists from within the orchestra. Sabrina Berger will perform David Snow’s work, Hasana Tanz, on electric violin. Mr Snow, a composer from Maryland, is expected to put in an appearance to hear the world premiere of his newest composition.

Joining Ms Berger for a second selection will be Alyce Cognetta Bertz, the orchestra’s concertmaster. Together they will perform the first movement of the Bach Double Concerto on electric violin.

The orchestra will also perform all-American selections from the movies, a local composer, and other great American composers.

Audience members should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, and picnics will be welcomed. If the weather does not cooperate, the concert will move to Pomperaug High School, 234 Judd Road in Southbury. A change of venue due to weather will be announced by early afternoon on WATR 1320 AM radio.
