Garner Prisoner Arrested

On Assault Charge

State police report a June 26 violent incident at Garner Correctional Institution in which a prisoner allegedly struck a correction officer.

State police said they responded to the high-security prison at 50 Nunnawauk Road at about 12:30 pm after learning that inmate Darzall Weinstein, 23, had struck a 43-year-old male correction officer who was attempting to remove Weinstein from his prison cell.

The correction officer received a minor injury and was transported to Danbury Hospital for a medical evaluation, state  police said.

State police charged Weinstein with assault on a public safety officer and with failure to submit to fingerprinting.

Weinstein was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges on June 27 in Danbury Superior Court. He is scheduled to return to court on July 25. 

Weinstein is serving a 20 - year prison sentence in Garner on a conviction for a controlling charge of assault on a police or fire officer.
