Mike Toll Installed As President Of Newtown Rotary

The Rotary Club of Newtown held its annual Pass the Gavel Celebration June 25, in which the club’s members, spouses, and guests enjoyed an evening at Rock Ridge Country Club to celebrate the successes of the previous year, and to install the new officers and directors of the club for the coming year.

On hand to perform the installation ceremony was Rotary District Governor Brian Amey, assisted by outgoing president Pat Caruso, who presented the ceremonial gavel to new president Mike Toll.

Mr Toll’s cabinet includes the following officers: Tom McKirdy, president elect; Christopher Hoeffel, vice president; Leslie Crannell, secretary; Joe Tarshis, treasurer; and Dr Bob Grossman, sergeant-at-arms. The directors are: Nick Borrello, membership; Mary Griffin, club administration; Ken Harper, public relations; Carrie Swan, Rotary Foundation; Dan Rosenthal, director at large; and Pat Caruso, past president.

Following an introduction by Abe Gordon, past Rotary International vice president, the club’s Frank Miles Award was presented to Bill Watts. This award recognizes the club member whose actions during the past year best exemplify the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.” Mr Watts has been an active member of the Rotary Club for 44 years.

Rotary District Governor Brian Amey and past district governor Julianne Reppenhagen named the following Rotarians Paul Harris Fellows, considered by all Rotarians to be a high honor: Leslie Crannell, Pat Kelley, Joe Hemingway, and Pat Caruso. Receiving his second Paul Harris Emerald was Jim Gulalo.

On occasion, the Rotary Club of Newtown will recognize with this award other members of the Newtown community who are not Rotarians. These individuals are recognized for the contributions that they make to the community and because they live the ideals of Rotary. The Rotary Club of Newtown was pleased to declare Linda DeLaurentis a Paul Harris Fellow for her outstanding support of Newtown Rotary’s fundraising and other volunteer efforts.

Also recognized for their notable efforts in support of the club’s work were the following Rotarians: Tony Salvatore, Karen King, Joe Tarshis, Brian Amey, Mary Griffin, Nick Borrello, Larry Gardner, Tom McKirdy, Alan Clavette, and Jim Gulalo. Additionally, recognized posthumously for his many years of service to Rotary, was K. Michael Snyder. Accepting the award for Mr Snyder were his daughters Claudia Snyder Romano and Heather Snyder.

The Rotary Club of Newtown meets every Monday evening at 6 at The Inn at Newtown. Anyone interested in learning more about the club should contact President Mike Toll at 203-788-5247 or visit the club’s website at www.NewtownCTRotary.org.
