Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. *Every Tuesday at 2 pm jump in the van for ice cream. Sign up at the front desk.

*Tuesday, July 10, from 5 to 7 pm is game night.

*Red, White & Blue Annual Barbecue at the Inn at Villa Bianca is on Wednesday, July 11. An all-you-can-eat family-style luncheon will be served, along with a complimentary drink, live music, and a visit from Uncle Sam. Cost is $29.95. The van seats 16 or car pool. Depart at 10:30 am.

*A Lobster and Barbequed Ribs & Chicken Feast at The Log Cabin in Holyoke, Mass., will be on Thursday, July 12. Depart at 7:30 am for the first stop at the Christmas Tree Shop and then onto lunch. Entertainment will be provided by The Riverboat Ramblers, musicians who play old tunes with new twists. Cost is $87.

*Special upcoming van trips include Captain’s Cove in Black Rock, on Friday, July 13, depart at 11 am; and the “Hoe Down” lunch at Stew Leonard’s on Friday, July 27, departing at 11:30 am. The van is limited to 16; registration is a must.

*The Golden Noters are looking for people to join the chorus for a weekly sing-along of the oldies with Ethel Kaufman every Monday at 1 pm.

 

Upcoming Programs

*An informational talk on heart disease and women will be Tuesday, July 17, at 1 pm. Ann Waldman, RN, from CT Nursing Services will provide information, support groups, services and literature to live a long, heart healthy life.

*On the third Monday of every month, there will be a bake sale from 9 to 10 am. We are looking for donations of baked goods to be brought in before that time.

*Bingo will be Wednesday, July 18, and Tuesday, July 24.

*Commission on Aging meets third Monday of every month at 5 pm.

*“Helping Caregivers When a Loved One is Seriously Ill” is the Lunch and Learn Series topic for Friday, July 20, at noon. Learn how to help and support families, as well as their loved ones with the physical and emotional demands of care for the seriously ill. Lunch is provided; call to reserve.

*Depart for Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Rhode Island for Johnny cakes and coffee Thursday, August 9. Lunch is at Matunuck Oyster Bar overlooking Potter’s Pond. Learn how shellfish are cultivated, possibly putting on a pair of waders to see an oyster farm in process. Cost is $90; depart at 7 am.

*On Friday, August 10, lunch is at Shadows on the Hudson overlooking the Hudson River; then onto the Walkway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian bridge over the river; and lastly, enjoy a two-hour cruise on the Mystere. Departure time is 8:45; cost is $83.

*Giant Tag Sale and Car Wash fundraiser is on Saturday, August 18, 9 am to 3 pm. Donate unwanted “treasures” by August 10 or reserve a table to rent for $25.

Day Trips

*The next Mohegan Sun Casino bus trip will be Thursday, July 26, at 8 am. The cost of $30 includes a $15 food coupon and three $5 bets.

*Annual Summer Picnic at Holiday Hill is Monday, August 20, 9 am to 4 pm. Unlimited buffet, entertainment by Vinnie Carr with dancing and singing, bingo all day, bocce, horseshoes, mini golf, heated pool, and more. Cost is $28 and must be paid by August 6. Depart at 8 am.

*Westchester Broadway Theatre luncheon trip to see Can-Can on Wednesday, September 5 for $90.

*Upcoming Trips: Fireworks and Fountains, July 20–22 at the Nemours Mansion and Gardens in Delaware and to the QVC home shopping network. Gold Mines & Ghost Towns in the Colorado High Country, August 11–18; and a Nova Scotia cruise on the Carnival Glory September 3–8.
