Anyone who enjoys winter sports knows that this past winter was a great one for skiing and boarding with lots of welcomed snow. The Winterset Ski Club – Newtown’s own ski club – can attest to that.

The club had approximately 180 members take part in five weekend or weeklong trips this year. The first weeklong trip was to Whistler, British Columbia where there was (amazingly enough) less snow than on the east coast but proved to be a wonderful, sunny and exciting trip nonetheless. Fifty-two members – 12 of them kids – took off the week of school vacation, February 20-27. Ham Brosious ran that trip.

The weekend of February 4-6, the club sponsored a bus trip to Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Forty-seven club members participated in this trip, which was run by Susan Brier. It included a two-day lift ticket, two nights accommodations at the Silver Fox Inn, beautiful spring skiing (even though it was February), pretty-much-everything breakfasts before skiing, and a gourmet dinner on Saturday night. It even included a horse-drawn sleigh ride for the kids.

The “On-Snow Carnival” competition weekend was held at Bromley Mountain this year. Fifty members took part. Winterset came in third place overall out of some 50 other CSC clubs. Trip leader was Nickie O’Toole. This weekend consisted of many fun competitions which include downhill, cross country, club race, team race, women’s, men’s and Junior’s race, snowboard, volleyball tournament (in Ski Boots, of course) and a tug of war tournament.

Thirty-two people took part in the tried and true Sugarloaf, Maine trip March 20-25, where the temperatures were consistently in the mid 30s to 40s and the snow was packed powder at its best. Andy Lapati ran this trip for the seventh consecutive year and it offered five-nights lodging in typically ski-in ski-out condos, five-and-a-half day lift tickets, daily free clinics, free health centers and, last but most important, a great mountain.

The club also sponsored single-day bus trips (this year to Okemo, Stratton and Haystack), racing clinics and Monday night racing competitions against other CT Ski Council clubs. Winterset came in third place overall this year in the Monday Night Racing season.

The Winterset Ski Club board members are Nicole Anastas, president; Denise Kane, vice president; Judy Loose, secretary; Peter Giarratano, treasurer; Mark Krasnickas, racing chairman; Linda Vitrella, E-membership; Angie Taylor, membership; Petra Dinnan, newsletter; Susan Brier, special trips; Chris Lincoln, publicity; Jennie Perry, social organizer; Chas Perry, merchandising; and Wally Wood, past president

Winterset Ski Club is a growing non-profit organization whose objective is to provide its diverse membership with a variety of trips and functions in order to keep the exhilarating sports of skiing and boarding available and affordable to everyone.

Membership is only $35 per year for a single membership with $5 for each additional member of the household.
