The Farm & The Home Front

Circa 1940

DERBY — At the Osborne Homestead Museum on Fridays, July 20, August 24 and September 21, from 12:30 to 2 pm, the public is invited to re-live a bit of the 1940s and learn how Frances Kellogg fared during World War II through a presentation called “The Farm and The Home Front in the 1940s.”

Recently discovered letters provide insight into the lifestyle of the property’s namesake during the war years and the difficulties on Osbornedale Farm. Included in this program will be a display of actual artifacts and some re-created items from the area. Listening to some of the popular (Big Band) music of the 1940s or trying knitting using a special Red Cross pattern will add to the experience.

Registration for any of these dates can be done by calling 734-2513.

The Osborne Homestead Museum is regularly open for free guided tours on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am to 3 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. There is no admission cost; donations are gratefully accepted.

The Osborne Homestead Museum, which is part of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Environmental Education, is at 500 Hawthorne Avenue, just off Route 34.
