Visiting Angels Plan Senior Open Mics

The Visiting Angels will be sponsoring upcoming acoustic open mic events at local senior centers in upcoming weeks, including a stop at Newtown Senior Center in August. Visiting Angels is a company that provides in-home care to senior citizens.

“Open mic is an inviting creative outlet for singers, instrumentalists, comedians, poets, whatever your talent,” said Michel Rae Driscoll of A Feel Good Life, a business focused on bettering one’s life through music and positive programming. “The crowd is usually highly supportive, with little or no expectations, eager for its unpredictability, spontaneity and pleasant surprises.”

Depending on how many people sign up, each performer is allowed 10 to 15 minutes at the microphone.

Ms Driscoll will begin a series of senior center open mics this week with a Fun Friday the 13th Party at Brookfield Senior Center. The fun will run from 12:30 to 2:30 pm at 100 Pocono Road.

Additional upcoming dates are Thursday, July 26, from 1 to 2:30 pm, at Newtown Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road; and Wednesday, August 29, from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Visiting Angels staff will be on site with treats and to answer any questions at each event (in Brookfield there will also be a raffle for lunch for two to The Hearth Restaurant).

Ms Driscoll will host each event, singing and providing musical instruments for talented seniors who would like to step on up and show everybody what they’ve got.

Participants are welcome to bring their own instruments to play or can opt to use one of Ms Driscoll’s acoustic guitar, keyboard, tambourines, bongo drums, guiro, Indian dholak, rhythm eggs and other assorted hand percussion instruments. There will even be interactive acoustic selections for fun seekers too shy to perform on their own.

“This is your time to shine: whether it’s singing, playing an instrument, telling jokes, doing impressions or sharing a poem; it’s time to shed some light on those hidden talents of yours,” said Ms Driscoll.
