Kent Road Residents Buy A Tercentennial Seat
Not long ago Sandra and Walter Motyka had an idea of a way to celebrate Newtownâs Tercentennial. Their idea was to gather their neighbors on Kent Road together and collectively purchase a theater seat to support the Edmond Town Hall Seats Program.
This is not the first charitable contribution Kent Road has made. Annually they contribute to the FAITH food pantry, Toys for Tots, and provide holiday baskets for the fire company and police department. The Kent Road residents also have a progressive holiday dinner and a fall chili party at which they do pruning and general road cleanup.
Among the donors were the Motykas, Paul and Maxine Mangiafico, Pushpa and Naveen Kapur, Linda and Tom Bilia, Bert and Tony Caraluzzi, Rhonda and Tom Cardella, Anthony Dowd, Teresa and William Guaragno, Jan and Marv Happel, Janice Harrison, Jackie and Steve Himmelfarb, Laura and David Mabon, Laura and Kevin Mitchell, Cynthia and Robert Sore, and Kay and Mike Yomazzo. All the Kent Road lots are sold although there is one house left to be built.
The Newtown Lions Club is spearheading the project to replace all 411 seats in the Edmond Town Hall Theatre. The Lions Club is selling the seats for $300 each, which pays for the new chair, floor repair, and a plaque on the back of each seat. The plaque may memorialize relatives or friends or just name the donor or the company. One donor wants a bit of poetry on her plaque.
So far 219 seats have been sold, earning $65,700. Other contributions, however, have brought the total collected to more than $86,000 of the $150,000 needed. Groups like Newtown Childrenâs Music for the Performing Arts have held fundraisers for the seats program.
âAny donation is very welcome,â said project chairman Gordon Williams. Those who wish to contribute should make checks out to the Edmond Town Hall Board of Managers and send them to the Newtown Lions Club, attention Gordon Williams, PO Box 218, Newtown CT 06470.
