Kairos Plans Prison Weekends

TARIFFVILLE — Kairos Prison Ministry is inviting men and women of all denominations to join with their 220 Connecticut volunteers for one of three upcoming weekends at Connecticut prisons.

Kairos provides a four-day, in-prison, short course in the Christian life. No previous prison ministry experience is required. All participants must undergo a police background check, and have a letter of recommendation from their minister.

Team members are required to attend a preweekend training program that is generally held on five Saturday mornings prior to the prison weekend. After the weekend experience, team members return to the prison one Saturday morning each month for one year to build up the inmate Christian community they started.

Kairos has presented 20 weekends in Connecticut over the past decade, ministering to more than 1,000 prisoners. Kairos is a 30-year-old international prison ministry with more than 20,000 volunteers, chapters in 30 states and teams currently serving 300 prisons in the United States and 200 in Europe, Australia, Africa, and Latin America.

Volunteers are invited to apply for teams being formed for the following prisons:

Osborn Prison in Somers, September 30–October 3. A men’s only team; team training will be held in Waterbury on Saturday mornings August 7, 21, 28, and September 18 and 25.

York Prison in Niantic, November 3–6. A women’s only team; team training in Wallingford on September 18, 25, October 23, and 30.

Manson Youth Prison in Cheshire. For both men and women; to be held in early 2005.
