Snapshot: Leah Laughlin
Family: My mom and my dad, and my brother Henry.
Pets: Our dog, Dudley.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We moved here when I was two, and we either left California or we arrived here on my birthday. I walked into our new house and there were some gifts waiting for me.
Work: I am a rising senior at Newtown High School. I also work at Julie Allen Bridals. I really like it there. There are a few other students from Newtown High School who work there, and it’s a lot of fun. I’m also interning for The Newtown Bee this summer.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I thought I wanted to be a journalist — that was my whole thing since freshman year — and then I got into Gray’s Anatomy and this doctor on YouTube and it’s made me want to be a doctor. I feel like journalism is sometimes seen as encroaching on people’s lives, and hurting people’s lives, and I wanted to help people, so I’ve changed my mind and decided I want to become a doctor.
What do you like to do in your free time? I love reading and writing, and I also got into crocheting over Christmas break. There’s this company called Wooble, and there’s these little crochet animals, and they give you the instructions and all the materials, so I’ve started doing that and really love it. I keep all of the ones I’ve done in my car because I enjoy looking at them every time I go somewhere.
If you could spend the day with one person, living or deceased, who would you choose and why? My friend Noelle. She’s a year older than me, and going off to college this year. She’s so spontaneous, and I feel like we would do something totally crazy, that would be off the cuff but it would be so fun because we wouldn’t expect to do that.
Favorite TV show? Gray’s Anatomy. I started watching that only recently. I was so behind — all my friends have already seen it — but I thought I should start watching it. I did and it’s so much better than I thought it would be and I got hooked.
Favorite actor? I’m a huge Hunger Games fan, so I just love those movies and I love Jennifer Lawrence and I love Tom Blyth.
What is something you cannot live without? My dog. I love going home every day and he’s just so cute. Every time I see him I want to give him a pet, or a little love.
Do you have any pet peeves? Slow walkers.
Favorite color? Purple
Favorite food? My mom makes this really good meat pasta and the sauce is super creamy. I really like that.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? I like that everyone kind of knows everyone. I don’t like cities — never have, never will, and would never live in one — and I would totally come back and live here after college. I love the small town feel that everyone is part of this big community, and you can turn to anyone for help and they would help you even if they don’t know you.
What are you looking forward to most during your senior year at Newtown High School? I just picked up my parking permit, so I guess finally being the big cat at school — being an example, and getting to do the fun things. I’m excited for graduation, senior parties, and getting to make memories.
Do you have a personal credo? Live Laugh Love. It’s similar to YOLO, but I feel like YOLO almost gives you a clock. You have to live life, but Live Laugh Love is more like “Take it slow, but remember and hold on to the moments you have.”
